This was a last minute activity that we decided to do; painting rocks with children is such a creative activity and it meant that the boys got super messy. Digging in the dirt and painting is like christmas for children, there’s nothing better than getting really stuck in!
So off we went to the park to pick some rocks. I thought it would be better if we picked the rocks ourselves and extended the activity to an all day thing. Let the boys accomplish a full task from picking the rocks, cleaning them, painting them, and then putting them in the garden in their full glory.
Picking the rocks
The boys loved getting down and dirty in the mud and digging, so many sensory experiences to explore!
Cleaning the rocks
It didn’t last long cleaning the rocks, they wanted to get going with the painting so we may have rushed this bit a little! Mylo spilt his tub of water a few times and I hear it trickling down his high chair.
Painting the rocks
Mylo obviously eat a lot of it as you can see in the picture! They really got stuck in with the painting rocks, it’s by far their favourite thing to do. I had to get stuck in too though, it’s only fair that I get a go!
These are the finished products.
Putting the rocks in the garden
Mylo fell asleep and Leo was eager to put the rocks in the garden after leaving them overnight to dry, so we left some out for Mylo whilst myself and Leo started distributing the others.
What we learnt from this activity
- Vocabulary – Dirty, Mucky, Crumbly (words that you wouldn’t use in everyday conversation)
- Teamwork – Working together to meet the same outcome
- Fine motor skills – Using a paintbrush, cleaning the rocks, digging the rocks from the soil
- Communication – Talking through everything that we were doing and using descriptive commentary
- Expressive arts – Painting
We vlogged our whole day if you want to have a look at what we did specifically, it was really fun!
We hope you enjoyed this blog and vlog! Let us know what you think 🙂
